Why It Matters

Mirabai came from a deeply devotional family that shaped her spiritual values. While she ultimately defied family expectations about her marriage, she never fully severed the teaching relationship with her elders. This concept invites arranged-marriage partners to hold a nuanced view of family: Your family's choices may be rooted in genuine wisdom about interdependence, stability, and values. AND you retain the right to question those choices, to advocate for your needs, and to make different decisions. Rather than either idealizing family judgment or demonizing it, approach family members as teachers with partial truth. They know something about partnership, loyalty, and community survival. You know something about your own heart and limitations. True maturity means learning from your family while maintaining your own conscience. This stance honors the collective while protecting the individual. Arranged marriages often succeed when partners adopt this both/and view: gratefully receiving family's gift of partnership while actively co-creating the relationship's meaning.
