Freedom Beyond the Wall: Expanding Conception of Liberation

Mirabai left her husband's palace but did not flee the world—she moved through it freely, constrained by neither social expectation nor personal fear. Her freedom was interior and embodied, not dependent on circumstance. In anticipatory grief for civilization, we face the reality that unlimited growth, infinite choice, and unconstrained consumption are ending. Rather than despair at constraint, we can learn from Mirabai's model: freedom exists within limits. This reframes anticipatory grief into anticipatory liberation. We are already losing the illusion of boundlessness. What freedom emerges when we accept finitude? The capacity to choose what matters most, to invest in relationships and places, to create with available resources, to live with integrity in smaller circles. This is not deprivation but a different freedom—deeper, more rooted. Mirabai's life demonstrates that profound freedom can coexist with social constraint.
