Why It Matters

Mirabai's freedom and her devotion were inseparable—she loved Krishna precisely because that love demanded she break free from other claims on her (husband, family, caste). The Freedom Conversation is a framework for discussing how both partners maintain autonomy within intimacy. This might address: space for solitude, friendships outside the relationship, individual purpose and ambition, the right to change, and resistance to being possessed. Many couples avoid this conversation, assuming love means fusion. Yet Mirabai's examined heart shows us that authentic devotion requires the freedom to choose it continuously. When you explicitly discuss freedom—yours and your beloved's—you shift from unconscious possession patterns to conscious commitment. This might sound like: 'I need time alone to reconnect with myself, and loving you doesn't change that,' or 'I want to pursue my work even if it takes me away.' These conversations are uncomfortable because they name the fear of loss. Yet by facing it directly, you build a love based on choice rather than entanglement, on examined devotion rather than reactive attachment.
