Freedom Through Fierce Commitment
The paradox that total commitment to a worthy love can paradoxically liberate us from anxious seeking and people-pleasing in relationships.
MiraMirabai's devotion to Krishna was so complete that it freed her from the need to please her family, her husband, or social expectation. This radical commitment became the source of her freedom. In attachment theory, anxious attachment often manifests as excessive flexibility and people-pleasing: we modify ourselves endlessly to keep a partner, losing ourselves in the process. Mirabai's model suggests an inversion: clarity about what is truly worthy of our devotion actually permits greater authenticity and boundaries. When we are firmly committed to a mature vision of love—one that requires mutuality, respect, and truth-telling—we paradoxically become less clingy and demanding. We stop trying to manipulate outcomes because our foundation is secure. This concept reframes secure attachment not as detachment, but as committed devotion to love itself: to showing up authentically with someone who is genuinely worthy of our presence.
