Why It Matters

Mirabai rejected social conventions to pursue her spiritual truth, embodying freedom through radical honesty. This model applies powerfully to children grieving: they often internalize messages that their grief is inconvenient, too intense, or shameful. Mirabai's freedom shows us that authentic expression—however messy or unpolished—is the path to liberation from grief's weight. Supporting children means creating environments where they are free to grieve 'wrong': to be angry at the person who died, to have good days that feel like betrayal, to laugh and cry in the same moment. This freedom is not permission to harm, but permission to be fully human. When children sense adults can hold their raw grief without flinching or trying to fix it, they experience the freedom that comes from being truly seen. Mirabai's life teaches that this kind of honest expression—refusing the performed versions of ourselves—is where spiritual and emotional liberation begins, even in childhood loss.
