Why It Matters

Mirabai's renown came only after her death, yet this did not define or undermine her path. She sang and danced for the beloved, not for reputation. This concept cuts to the heart of modern autonomy struggles: much of what we call independence is still enslaved to the gaze of others. We resist them, seek their approval, rebel against their judgment—but we're still defined by them. True autonomy, in bhakti understanding, is freedom from the entire game of recognition and rejection. This doesn't mean not caring what others think; it means not needing their confirmation to know your own truth. Paradoxically, this freedom allows genuine togetherness: when you're not performing for approval or rebelling against judgment, you can actually see and relate to others. In relationships and community, this means you can show up fully without needing the other person to validate your choices or identity. Mirabai belonged to herself first, and this made her capable of profound love that asked nothing in return.
