Why It Matters

Mirabai rejected conventional paths to freedom—marriage, propriety, worldly security—because they required deadening the heart. Her freedom came through choosing love so completely that she lost the social self. This inverts modern grief culture's impulse: to process loss quickly, return to function, and move on. Mirabai suggests a different freedom—one found in the willingness to be broken by grief, to let loss reshape you. In collective mourning, this means resisting the pressure to recover quickly from public tragedies. True freedom includes the freedom to grieve deeply, to let the death of a beloved public figure change how we see the world, to organize our lives around what the loss revealed. Mirabai lived broken-open; this openness was her liberation. Collective grief that moves through this breaking rather than avoiding it becomes a practice of freedom itself.
