Why It Matters

Mirabai was considered a transgressive saint because she refused social convention to follow her spiritual calling. She danced publicly, abandoned her husband's house, and sang of her longing in ways that shocked her society. This freedom came through her radical acceptance of loss—she had already grieved everything she was 'supposed' to be, and in that grieving, she became authentically herself. Collective mourning can catalyze similar freedom. When we witness the sudden death of a public figure, we confront mortality's reality. That confrontation, if we allow it, burns away pretense. Who cares what others think of our grief? What matters anyway, in the face of death? This realization is terrifying and liberating. Many people report that after genuinely mourning a loss, they stop performing versions of themselves. They speak more honestly. They prioritize differently. Freedom Through Grieving suggests that the path to authentic living runs through the valley of tears.
