Why It Matters

Mirabai's poetry overflows with grief—the pain of separation, loss, and the impossibility of ultimate union. Rather than avoiding this pain, she moved through it, transforming it into profound wisdom and artistic expression. Many attachment patterns are rooted in ungrieved losses and unfulfilled childhood longings that we unconsciously replay in romantic relationships. Avoidant individuals grieve by withdrawing; anxious individuals grieve by clinging. Mirabai's path suggests that authentic attachment requires moving consciously through grief: the grief of unmet childhood needs, the loss of idealized fantasy partners, the pain of our own limitations and mortality. When we consciously grieve what was lost, we become available to what is actually present. This doesn't mean pursuing sadness, but rather allowing sorrow to soften our defenses and open our hearts. Through this gateway of grief, we can meet partners as they actually are, not as replacements for what we've lost.
