Grief as Love Continued

Redefining grief not as the opposite of love but as love without its object, allowing children to recognize their ongoing love as evidence of what was real.

Why It Matters

The paradox at the heart of Mirabai's spirituality is that her separation from Krishna proved her devotion—her longing was itself the presence of her love. For grieving children, this offers a revolutionary perspective: grief is not the end of love but its continuation in a new form. When they miss someone, when their chest aches with longing, when they suddenly remember something small the person did—these are moments of ongoing love. Rather than telling children 'they're in a better place' or 'they wouldn't want you sad,' this framework says: Your sadness is your love speaking. Your tears are your heart refusing to forget. This fundamentally shifts the meaning of grief from something to overcome into something to honor. Children learn they are not broken by continuing to love someone who has died; they are proving the depth of connection that once existed and continues in transformed ways.
