Why It Matters

Mirabai's heart holds seemingly opposing truths: Krishna is both present and absent, her love both devotion and defiance, her longing both agony and ecstasy. The examined heart does not demand consistency. Grief groups informed by this approach explicitly teach members to hold paradoxes without prematurely collapsing them into false coherence. A griever can feel both grateful for years shared and robbed of future time; both relieved of the person's suffering and furious at losing them; both healed and forever changed by the loss. Western thought often seeks to resolve contradictions, but Mirabai's poetic tradition finds profound truth in paradox itself. When group members give themselves permission to hold 'both/and' rather than forcing 'either/or' choices, they access more authentic integration. This practice reduces the exhausting internal debate many grievers experience. Instead of judging themselves for 'still' being angry, members name the valid coexistence of multiple truths. Over time, this tolerance for paradox extends beyond grief into broader wisdom: life becomes less about resolving tensions and more about dancing within them wisely.
