Longing as Engine of Mudita and Metta
Mirabai's spiritual yearning as the emotional fuel that powers genuine brahmaviharas, converting desire itself into compassion and loving-kindness.
MiraMirabai burned with longing for Krishna—an ache that never ceased, even in devotion. Rather than dissolving this longing through enlightenment, she lived it as sacred fire. This longing, when understood deeply, becomes the engine of brahmaviharas. Metta and mudita require genuine emotional energy—the same yearning to connect, to witness, to celebrate that moves lovers and devoted friends. Without longing, brahmaviharas become cold practices, intellectual exercises in goodwill. Mirabai shows that authentic loving-kindness emerges from the heart's capacity to want deeply: to want the other's flourishing, to want connection, to want the beloved (in its broadest sense) to be free and happy. In relationships, the practice becomes: Can you feel your longing for the other's wellbeing? Can you let that yearning move you toward compassion? Mirabai's examined heart teaches that brahmaviharas are not transcendence of desire but its sacred direction.
