Why It Matters

Mirabai scandalized her society by renouncing household life for mystical love with Krishna. This was not escape but a deliberate choice to align love with ultimate truth rather than social obligation. Her life demonstrates that relationships become vehicles for liberation when they are organized around genuine care rather than possession, duty, or ego satisfaction. In Buddhist Brahmaviharas practice, this means examining whether our loving-kindness, compassion, and sympathetic joy are rooted in attachment or in authentic wish for others' awakening. Mirabai's freedom arose from loving what could not be grasped—the divine—which paradoxically allowed her to genuinely serve all beings she encountered. For modern relationships, this concept invites us to ask: Am I loving this person to control them, to complete myself, or to support their full flourishing? When love becomes aligned with the other's liberation rather than our security, relationships transform from prisons of expectation into sanctuaries of growth. This is love as Mirabai knew it: boundless, liberating, and ultimately freeing.
