Love as the Only Adequate Response

Recognizing that love—in all its forms—is the only response adequate to the magnitude of loss, more powerful than despair or denial.

Why It Matters

Mirabai's entire life was a statement: that in the face of a world that demands conformity and offers only hollow rewards, love is the only adequate response. Not passive sentiment but active, fierce, embodied devotion to what is real and sacred. As we face the magnitude of civilizational transformation and loss, love—of place, of people, of the non-human world, of beauty, of life itself—becomes a radical act. It is more truthful than denial, more empowering than despair, more transformative than outrage alone. Love includes the capacity to grieve what we are losing, to work for what is possible, to cherish what remains, and to stay vulnerable and open rather than hardening into cynicism or rage. Mirabai sang that she would not be comforted; her love was not nice but all-consuming. Our times call for the same quality of love: fierce, awake, grief-inclusive, and directed toward what genuinely matters. This love becomes the resilience, the motivation, and the meaning-making practice that sustains us through and beyond anticipated loss.
