Why It Matters

Mirabai loved Krishna without guarantee of return. This was not codependency; it was the foundation of her freedom. She could not be destroyed by Krishna's indifference because her love was not transactional. Modern attachment anxiety often disguises itself as love but is actually a demand: 'If you love me back the way I need, I will be okay.' This inverts the relationship, making the partner responsible for your wholeness. Mirabai's bhakti suggests a revolutionary alternative: love from fullness, not from emptiness. Choose partners you genuinely care for, then love them as they are, not as you need them to be. This doesn't mean accepting mistreatment; it means releasing the fantasy that perfect reciprocation will heal your wounds. A secure attachment allows you to love a real, imperfect partner rather than an imagined one. You can be hurt without being destroyed. You can long without being desperate. This paradoxically creates more stable relationships: partners feel chosen, not needed; loved, not relied-upon for rescue.
