Loyalty Beyond Reciprocity

Mirabai loved Krishna for decades without receiving confirmation, comfort, or proof. Her devotion was not dependent on feeling, experience, or validation. This is radically different from human romantic love, which typically requires reciprocal attention, response, and mutual commitment to sustain. In celibacy without sex, this practice of loyalty beyond reciprocity becomes central. The examined heart learns to love the divine, to commit to its own growth, and to serve others without demanding that these loves return equivalent energy. This is not masochism but maturity: the ability to care deeply, to show up consistently, to remain open to another without collapsing into resentment when needs are not met. This skill—to love freely, without the safety net of reciprocal obligation—transfers to all relationships. Friendships deepen. Parental and filial bonds become more genuine. Service becomes untainted by hidden expectations of return.
