Nirakar Bhakti: Loving the Formless

While Mirabai worshipped Krishna in form, the ultimate object of her devotion was the formless divine—nirakar—the boundless reality beneath all manifestation. This distinction illuminates a paradox in attraction: we are drawn to particular faces, bodies, and personalities, yet the deepest attraction points beyond form to the infinite consciousness within. Nirakar bhakti teaches that physical attraction is the gateway, not the destination. The science of love confirms this: couples who experience profound lasting connection have moved from attraction to form toward appreciation of the person's essential consciousness. To love nirakar means to see through the personality's limitations toward the other's boundless potential and essential nature. This transforms attraction from possession ('I want to own this beautiful form') to liberation ('I want to serve the infinite consciousness expressing through this person'). In practice, nirakar bhakti means regularly remembering that both you and the object of your attraction are infinitely larger than what the eyes perceive.
