Why It Matters

Mirabai's poems and songs contain contradiction: ecstatic devotion alongside protest, love alongside rage at injustice, surrender alongside defiance. She did not resolve these tensions into a single coherent narrative. Instead, she held them in polyphonic form, like a raga that contains multiple melodic lines at once. For anticipatory grief, this is crucial: we do not have to choose between grief and hope, between acknowledging crisis and taking action, between rage at systems and love for the people within them. We can hold multiple truths simultaneously. The world is dying and we are alive. Things are getting worse in measurable ways and beauty persists. Our actions may not prevent collapse and they remain worth doing. This capacity to witness polyphonically—without forcing premature resolution—keeps us emotionally honest and practically flexible. It prevents the brittleness that comes from insisting on a single story. It is the emotional and epistemological sophistication that anticipatory grief at civilizational scale requires.
