Prema: Love Beyond Recognition
The bhakti practice of radical love that doesn't depend on knowing or recognizing the beloved—applicable to loving the stranger you've become.
MiraPrema in Sanskrit means love in its highest, most selfless form—love that asks nothing of its object and requires no familiarity. Mirabai's devotion to Krishna persisted even when she could not see him, touch him, or prove his existence to skeptics. Her love was not contingent on recognition or return. When grieving your former identity, prema offers a paradoxical path: instead of demanding that your new self somehow align with or justify your old self, you practice loving the person you are becoming without insisting they be recognizable to you yet. This is not acceptance of loss but a deeper love—one that doesn't require the beloved (yourself) to perform familiarity. Prema teaches that you need not understand your transformation to honor it with genuine devotion and tenderness toward the stranger within.
