Why It Matters

Mirabai's poetry was filled with questions: Where is Krishna? Why does he hide? How do I love what cannot be possessed? She did not answer these questions; she lived in them, deepened them, sang them. This questioning was itself the practice. Applied to anticipatory grief for civilization, this concept invites us to resist the urge to resolve or contain our grief through false answers. Instead, we tend the questions: What do we owe to future generations we will not meet? How do we grieve for what has not yet been lost? What is worth preserving, and how? Living in the question—holding it open, returning to it, allowing it to change us—is a spiritual discipline that prevents anticipatory grief from hardening into ideology or despair. The question keeps us alive, awake, and connected to the real complexity of what we face.
