Raag: Personal Expression Within Universal Form

A raag is a melodic framework in Indian classical music—a set of notes, rules, and emotional moods within which a musician improvises. Each raag offers structure and tradition, yet demands the performer's unique voice and interpretation. Mirabai worked within the raag tradition, using classical forms to express intensely personal, sometimes heterodox devotion. Raag is a powerful metaphor for autonomy and togetherness: you are neither a completely free improviser (which often produces noise) nor a mere reproducer of tradition. Instead, you flourish within structures—cultural, relational, ethical—that give your autonomy meaningful form. In relationships, raag suggests that healthy boundaries and shared agreements actually enable more authentic individuality, not less.
