Radical Presence in Declining Systems

Mirabai refused to play the role society assigned her—obedient widow, respectable woman. She chose presence to her own truth over institutional belonging. In anticipatory grief, we face institutions and systems in decline: universities, democracies, ecosystems, economies. Radical presence means we stop performing belief in their permanence or redemption. Instead, we show up as ourselves—grieving, aware, still committed to the work at hand. A teacher in a failing school system teaches with full presence anyway. A farmer tends soil she may not own long. A parent raises a child into an uncertain world without false reassurance. This is not sabotage but integrity. Mirabai's radical presence in her devotion became infectious; her authenticity awakened others. Our honest presence in declining systems—neither naive optimism nor cynical withdrawal—may model what's possible.
