Rasa: The Emotional Essence of Creative Work

Rasa—literally "juice" or "essence"—is the emotional and aesthetic quality that gives a work of art its power to move. In Indian aesthetics, there are nine rasas (love, laughter, sorrow, anger, courage, fear, disgust, wonder, peace), and a great work of art captures and transmits one or more of these with purity.
