Why It Matters

Rasa—the emotional essence or flavor of an experience—is central to bhakti understanding. In Mirabai's poetry, each encounter with the divine carries a distinct rasa: sometimes longing, sometimes ecstasy, sometimes despair. Applied to boundaries in love, rasa invites you to notice the emotional texture of your relationships. Does this connection feel like devotion or obligation? Like freedom or constraint? Like mutual recognition or one-sided demand? Each relationship has a rasa, a quality you can learn to recognize. Some relationships offer the rasa of playfulness (Krishna's lila); others offer the rasa of service or protection. The boundary practice is this: identify the rasa you actually want in your life, then protect relationships that offer it and establish limits with those that don't. A relationship with the rasa of criticism or control, no matter how long-standing, deserves a boundary. Mirabai chose relationships—human and divine—that honored her spirit. So can you. Rasa awareness transforms boundaries from rigid rules into expressions of emotional integrity.
