Surrender as Agency

Mirabai's surrender to Krishna was an active choice, not passive resignation, revealing how secure attachment balances yielding with authentic agency.

Why It Matters

A critical misreading of bhakti is mistaking surrender for victimhood or self-erasure. Mirabai's surrender was radically agentic: she chose Krishna despite social condemnation, defied her family's expectations, and lived her devotion publicly and courageously. Her surrender was not to a dominating other but to a higher truth that liberated her from conventional constraints. In attachment work, this reframes a common confusion: secure attachment is neither controlling dominance nor passive compliance. Both anxious and avoidant partners often experience choice as an illusion—the anxious person feels compelled by fear of loss; the avoidant person feels threatened by intimacy. Secure attachment involves genuine agency: we choose commitment, vulnerability, and intimacy with clarity about costs and benefits. We surrender our ego's defensive armor not because we're forced but because we recognize deeper truth in vulnerability. This surrender paradoxically increases our power—freed from protective defenses, we can respond authentically and creatively. Mirabai's model teaches that real agency includes yielding to love, and that the most courageous choice is often the one that society punishes: to love freely and truthfully.
