Why It Matters

Viraag means renunciation or detachment—but in Mirabai's hands, it is not cold withdrawal but loving release. She detached from social expectation, family duty, even her own reputation, because her love for Krishna demanded total surrender. This teaches us that grief, when met with viraag, becomes liberation. By releasing attachment to how things should have been, or to the fantasy of control, we free creative energy that was locked in resistance. Viraag invites grievers to ask: What attachments am I clinging to that prevent me from creating? What would emerge if I surrendered to what is, rather than fighting what cannot be changed? This detachment is not indifference—it is the clarity that allows authentic creation.
