Virah—The Creative Power of Longing

Virah, or the pain of separation, was central to Mirabai's spiritual path and poetic voice. Rather than viewing longing as pathology, her tradition recognizes it as a precision instrument for truth-telling and creation. When we lose someone or something we love, we experience virah acutely: the gap between what was and what is. This gap is paradoxically fertile. Mirabai's most powerful songs emerged from her virah—separation from Krishna. Grief and longing strip away pretense; they demand authenticity. In creative work, virah prevents sentimentality and keeps us honest. A griever knows what matters. This concept teaches that our most meaningful creations often come not from comfort but from sustained, conscious relationship with absence.
