Why It Matters

Mirabai refused the silence and restraint expected of high-status women. She danced, sang publicly, and expressed devotion with abandon. This was radical vulnerability in a context demanding stoic concealment. Contemporary collective grief often demands similar concealment—we are expected to contain, to perform appropriate sorrow, to move on efficiently. Mirabai's model insists on the courage of visible vulnerability. True strength in collective mourning may mean permitting ourselves to feel and express what society deems excessive. This framework resists the pressure toward measured, controlled grief. It asks: what would authentic collective mourning look like if we permitted ourselves the vulnerability Mirabai modeled? This doesn't mean abandoning all form, but it means refusing the suppression of genuine feeling. Visible vulnerability becomes an act of truth-telling and solidarity with others who grieve deeply.
