Why It Matters

Abhyasa, meaning persistent practice, is foundational to Patanjali's yoga philosophy and directly applies to adult attachment. Rather than expecting relationships to transform through insight alone, abhyasa teaches that secure attachment develops through consistent, deliberate practice. This might mean regularly practicing non-reactive listening, repeatedly choosing vulnerability despite fear, or continuously returning to presence during conflict. In attachment work, abhyasa means recognizing that anxious or avoidant patterns were learned through repetition and can be unlearned the same way. Each interaction becomes an opportunity to practice new relational patterns. Patanjali understood that the mind becomes what it repeatedly practices—when we repeatedly practice secure relating, our nervous system gradually rewires. This framework transforms attachment healing from a one-time insight into a sustainable practice of small, consistent choices that compound into genuine transformation of how we love and connect.
