Samadhi: Unified Belief and Direct Experience
Samadhi is the state where belief merges with direct experience and truth is known directly rather than accepted secondhand.
PatanSamadhi, the ultimate goal of yoga in Patanjali's system, is the state of unified consciousness where the observer, observation, and observed merge into one. In relation to beliefs, samadhi represents the pinnacle of belief transformation: the point where we no longer merely hold a belief intellectually, but embody it through direct experience and realization. Most of our beliefs are secondhand—accepted from culture, family, or authority without direct verification. Samadhi dissolves this gap. Through sustained meditation and practice, the meditator transcends the subject-object duality and experiences truth directly. When a belief becomes samadhi-based rather than assumption-based, it is unshakeable not from rigidity, but from direct knowing. This is why Patanjali emphasizes meditation practices: they lead to direct perception that naturally resolves doubts and transforms beliefs at the deepest level. Samadhi is belief transformation at its most complete.
