Why It Matters

Patanjali opens the Yoga Sutras with the definition of yoga as "vritti nirodha"—the cessation of mental fluctuations. Trauma survivors experience uncontrolled mental chatter, intrusive thoughts, and repetitive rumination about past events. These vrittis (thought waves) create a self-perpetuating cycle of anxiety and emotional dysregulation. Patanjali teaches that the mind, when untrained, becomes chaotic and destructive. Through meditation and concentration practices, one progressively stabilizes attention and reduces involuntary mental activity. For trauma survivors, this means developing the capacity to observe thoughts without being swept away by them—recognizing flashbacks and rumination as mental patterns rather than current reality. By progressively stilling these fluctuations, individuals create the mental clarity and stability necessary to process trauma and restore emotional equilibrium.
