Belonging Over Belonging-To

Creating spaces where people belong with each other rather than belong to a founder, preventing communities from becoming personality cults.

Why It Matters

Rabia's vision of community was radically non-hierarchical for her era: circles of lovers gathered in mutual devotion to truth, not to a central figure. This concept distinguishes healthy belonging—networks of mutual care and shared purpose—from belonging-to, where members orbit a founder and the community's identity depends on that person's presence. Narcissistic legacy-building often disguises itself as community-creation, but members actually belong to the leader's story, not to each other. A sustainable legacy creates structures where people belong together even after the founder disappears. This requires intentional design: distributed leadership, redundancy in wisdom-keeping, systems that function without charisma. Rabia's communities survived not because they worshipped her but because they shared her values independently. Modern applications include explicitly creating successor systems, refusing cult-of-personality dynamics, and building governance that diffuses power. The ultimate test: could this community thrive if everyone forgot who founded it?
