Community as Extended Family

Rabia's love extended to all creation—she saw God's presence everywhere and served all beings with equal devotion. While Confucianism privileges the biological parent-child bond, this concept asks: how can filial piety expand to embrace the broader community of elders and those who have shaped us? Many people have insufficient or broken parental relationships; many are raised communally or by extended family. Rabia's model suggests that the filial impulse—the drive to honor, serve, and belong within a lineage—can extend to all who have nourished us. This honors stepparents, grandparents, teachers, mentors, and community elders as worthy of filial devotion. It acknowledges that belonging is constructed through relationship, not only through biology. By practicing filial piety toward the wider community of elders, we fulfill both Rabia's inclusive vision and a deeper Confucian truth: that culture and wisdom are transmitted through multiple relationships, and honor belongs to all who serve the young.
