Divine Love as Collective Foundation

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that love of God should be free from fear of punishment or hope of reward—a love so pure it transcends personal benefit. In cohousing communities, this concept invites residents to cultivate relationships and steward shared resources from a place of genuine care rather than transaction or obligation. When love becomes the foundation, conflicts arise from misalignment with shared values rather than ego. This transforms how community members approach meals, maintenance, conflict resolution, and decision-making. The practice asks: "Am I contributing to this space because I truly love this community, or because I fear judgment?" This shift from conditional to unconditional belonging deepens trust and creates resilience during inevitable tensions.
