Divine Love Without Hierarchy

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that love of God must be pure and unconditional, free from calculation or preference. This framework extends to human relationships: true devotion recognizes the divine spark in every person equally. When favoritism emerges—privileging certain people over others—it reveals a fragmented heart still operating from ego rather than unified love. Rabia's tradition suggests that favoritism costs us spiritual integrity and fragments our capacity for genuine belonging. By examining whom we favor and why, we expose the self-interested motives beneath our choices. The remedy lies in cultivating a love so expansive it cannot compress itself into preference, treating each person as equally worthy of kindness, attention, and inclusion.
