The Hidden Arithmetic of Love

Beneath every favoritism lies an invisible ledger: calculations about who is worthy of time, affection, resources, and presence. These metrics appear neutral—we favor the child who performs well, the colleague who flatters us, the friend who matches our interests—yet they systematically advantage those already privileged while marginalizing those starting behind. Rabia al-Adawiyya rejected all such arithmetic in her pure devotion, loving the Divine not for reward but as the only honest response to existence. Applied to human community, her wisdom exposes the cruelty of hidden accounting: the overlooked person who needs attention most receives least; the struggling child gets fewer resources because they show less promise; the quiet colleague goes unnoticed. The cost accumulates in opportunity hoarding—those favored receive mentorship, introductions, second chances; others are written off early. Worse, the metrics become internalized: people begin to believe their lesser access reflects lesser worth. True belonging requires abandoning the arithmetic entirely, distributing attention and care based not on performance or likability, but on shared humanity and genuine need.
