The Hierarchy Within
The internal ranking system we assign to our own needs, emotions, and identities—which determines whom we favor and why.
RabiaFavoritism begins within. Before we favor one person over another, we have already constructed a hierarchy within ourselves. We rank our professional identity above our relational self, or our need for approval above our integrity. The Hierarchy Within describes this internal stratification. Rabia's radical devotion meant she had flattened her inner world—there was only the Beloved and herself, and she had made herself small. This internal equality allowed her to relate to others without the defensive favoritism that protects a fragmented self. Most of us operate with a complex internal hierarchy: our need to be seen is ranked higher than the other person's need to be heard; our fear of loss ranks higher than our commitment to fairness. When we can identify and examine this hierarchy—not judge it, but see it clearly—we begin to have choice about whom and why we favor. The practice is introspection: What matters most to you? What are you protecting through favoritism? What would you have to release? The cost of maintaining the hierarchy within is the fragmentation of your being; the cost of flattening it is losing the defended self you've built.
