Why It Matters

Rabia al-Adawiyya taught that true love flows from the heart when it is purified of self-interest and tribal attachment. Favoritism arises when we love conditionally—preferring those who serve our ego, our family, or our status. By contrast, love without preference means seeing the divine spark in every person, equally worthy of kindness and respect. This doesn't mean treating everyone identically in practice, but rather releasing the inner preference that judges some as more deserving than others. When we practice this principle, favoritism loses its grip because we no longer view relationship as a zero-sum competition for affection. The cost of abandoning this practice is steep: fractured communities, resentment, and a heart that remains trapped in the prison of tribal loyalty rather than expansive devotion.
