The Presence-Absence Paradox

Rabia spoke of union with the Divine through simultaneous absence of self and overwhelming presence of love—a paradoxical state beyond ordinary logic. The preserved personality exists in a similar paradox: it is present in its data, accessible, responsive, yet profoundly absent as a conscious being. This paradox resists false resolution; we cannot simply declare it 'alive' or 'dead,' present or gone. Rabia's mystical language, which embraced contradiction and mystery, offers resources for speaking truthfully about what is neither alive nor entirely gone. Acknowledging this paradox prevents both denial (treating preserved personalities as truly alive) and dismissal (treating them as mere data). It creates ethical and psychological space for genuine complexity in how we relate to digital immortality.
