Why It Matters

For Rabia, presence itself was prayer—the practice of turning toward the divine in each moment. In attachment parenting, this becomes the practice of turning toward the child: truly showing up in conversations, play, and conflict. Many parents are physically present but mentally absent, scrolling or planning while nominally supervising. Rabia's framework asks: What if your presence itself was the offering? This doesn't require constant engagement but does require consistent availability and attunement. When a parent practices presence-as-prayer, they develop the capacity to notice and respond to their child's emotional cues—the slight tone change, the shift in energy, the unspoken need. This attunement is what secure attachment research shows is transformative. The child learns that their inner world registers; they matter enough to be truly noticed. Over time, this internalized experience becomes the child's template for self-awareness and relationships. Practically, presence-as-prayer might mean establishing tech-free family times, practicing active listening without immediately solving, or simply sitting with a child in discomfort. These practices cultivate the parent's capacity for sustained, loving attention. The child grows up knowing what it feels like to be genuinely seen and held.
