Why It Matters

Rabia's spiritual path was not about perfecting herself but about perfecting her presence with the divine. Parental authority, too, is built through presence, not perfection. Authoritarian parents often demand that children respect a false image—the parent who never errs, never wavers, never needs help. This teaches children to fear rather than trust. Authoritative parenting instead models that authority includes admitting mistakes, apologizing, and growing. A parent who says "I was harsh with you. That was my frustration, not your fault. I'm sorry and I'm working on it" becomes more authoritative, not less. Children learn that authority is compatible with humanity. Presence means showing up consistently, even imperfectly; it means the child experiences the parent as real and reliably there, not as a distant enforcer. This presence, repeated over years, becomes the true source of a parent's influence. Legacy flows from who you are, not from a perfect performance.
