Why It Matters

Rabia withdrew into prayer and communion, then returned to teach and guide. Many adult children of intergenerational trauma need permission to withdraw—from family expectations, from guilt, from the unspoken demand to remain entangled in dysfunction for the sake of loyalty. Sacred Solitude and Earned Return honors both the need for separateness and the eventual choice to re-engage. You might need months or years of limited contact to build your own psychological foundation, to recover your own voice, to stop unconsciously mimicking your parents' behavior. This is not punishment; it is necessary medicine. The 'Earned Return' phase comes when you have done enough inner work that you can be present with family members without losing yourself, without activating old patterns, without inadvertently teaching your children the same entanglement. Rabia's model shows that spiritual maturity includes knowing when to be alone and when to be present—both are acts of love.
