Selfless Intercession for Ancestors

Rabia famously rejected self-interested prayer, famously saying she wanted to serve God without hope of paradise or fear of hell. This principle applies powerfully to ancestor veneration: Selfless Intercession means praying for ancestors' peace, liberation, or spiritual advancement without seeking their aid in return. In Catholic tradition, masses said for the deceased's soul; in Buddhist practice, merit-making ceremonies for ancestors; in Islamic tradition, recitation of Quran for the deceased—all embody this selfless orientation. This approach dissolves the transactional nature that can corrupt ancestor relationships. Instead of venerating ancestors primarily to gain protection, prosperity, or guidance, we invest in their spiritual wellbeing. This reversal transforms the relationship: we become caretakers of our ancestors' souls rather than dependent petitioners. The practice cultivates spiritual maturity while honoring ancestors with genuine love, creating a bond based on mutual spiritual growth rather than self-interest.
