Why It Matters

Rabia insisted on radical personal accountability and inner work as the foundation of genuine love. She would not accept followers who sought spiritual shortcuts or who loved God as a means to personal benefit. This principle applies sharply to adult parent-child dynamics: a parent who has not examined their own wounds, narcissism, or need for control will inevitably damage the relationship with their adult child. Similarly, adult children who have not separated psychologically from parental influence will either rebel destructively or remain entangled. Rabia's teaching suggests that belonging and community are only possible when individuals have done the inner work to show up as whole persons rather than as wounded reactivity. This might mean therapy, spiritual practice, honest self-assessment, or mentorship. For parents, it means asking: Have I released my need to be needed? Have I grieved the end of active parenting? For adult children: Have I forgiven my parents' limitations? Have I developed my own values? When both generations approach the relationship from a place of spiritual maturity, genuine adult friendship and community become possible.
