Why It Matters

Central to Rumi's teaching is the dissolution of the separate self (fana) in union with the divine. Applied to health, this means releasing the ego's grip on illness identity and outcomes. Research on acceptance-commitment therapy and mindfulness shows that patients who surrender attachment to controlling their illness—while remaining committed to treatment—experience less anxiety and better immune function. Rumi's framework suggests that our resistance to suffering creates additional psychological burden; when we dissolve into acceptance of what is, healing proceeds more naturally. This doesn't mean passivity but rather aligning action with acceptance, matching Sufi surrender with evidence-based recovery protocols that benefit from reduced stress hormones.
