Why It Matters

Rumi teaches that union with the Divine occurs not through escape but through deepening presence in the moment, seeing the Beloved in all creation. Indigenous North American spiritualities similarly emphasize witnessing as a sacred act: sitting in circle, listening to elders, observing animal behavior, and reading the language of natural phenomena. This witnessing is not passive but an active form of relationship that honors the presence of spirit in all beings. Both traditions understand that when we truly see—without judgment, with full attention—we participate in the sacred. Council circles, where each voice is witnessed and held, embody this principle. The concept reveals how presence itself becomes a devotional practice, transforming ordinary attention into communion. Through witnessing, we acknowledge the inherent sacredness of what we encounter and deepen our belonging to the living world.
