Doubt as the Veil's Thinning

In Sufi cosmology, the veil separates human consciousness from divine reality. Rumi teaches that the veil is not solid but luminous, growing thinner through love and longing. Doubt appears precisely at these thin places—moments when the illusion of separation cracks. Rather than sign of spiritual failure, doubt signals the veil's dissolution. When certainty about who 'I' am begins to collapse, doubt floods in because the ego's protective architecture weakens. This is necessary death before resurrection. For practitioners, doubt becomes an instrument of perception: it reveals where we still cling to separate identity, where we still defend the false self. By practicing with doubt as veil-thinning, we stop fighting the confusion and instead allow it to teach us about attachment. Each doubt becomes a transparent space through which the Divine's presence becomes increasingly visible, until the veil itself vanishes.
