How do I carry work that could cost lives?

You signed up for serious work. Now the weight of it has caught up with you — a decision here, a report there, and somewhere down the line, a life. You feel it at your desk, in meetings, at night when you can't sleep. This feeling is not proof you are unfit for the work. It is proof you still understand what the work is. Many people who hold real power lose this feeling over time. You have not lost it yet. That is not weakness. Guard it. But feeling the weight and carrying it well are different skills. Your team feels it too, even if no one says so. The task now is not to make the weight vanish. It is to decide, together, what is yours to control — and to stop gripping the rest.

The person already understands the stakes intellectually; what they lack is a practiced way to carry the weight daily with a team, which is coaching territory, not information.

What’s really going on

You do not carry this weight alone, and you were never meant to. Feel it fully. Then act only on what is actually yours: your judgment, your honesty with your team, your next decision. Outcomes, history, and blame were never within your power. Let them go.

A moveSay out loud to your team, once and specifically, what worries you most about the work — not in general terms, name the exact decision or scenario.
A moveWrite two short lists: what is yours (your judgment, your process, your honesty) and what is not (others' choices, decisions made above you, outcomes you cannot see). Keep the second list visible.
A moveSet a short recurring check-in with your team — five minutes, once a week — where each person names one thing they are carrying.
A moveWhen a decision keeps you awake, ask one question: did I act on my best judgment with the information I had? If yes, set it down. You do not get to relitigate it every night.
A moveIf the weight has stopped feeling occasional and started feeling constant, talk to someone outside the work — a professional, not only your team. That is not a failure. That is maintaining the instrument you work with.

What changes unlock by starting

  • You stop carrying hard decisions alone inside your own head.
  • You can state precisely what part of an outcome was yours and what wasn't.
  • Your team names the moral weight openly instead of each person hiding it.
  • You act with more clarity and less paralysis on the next hard call.
