How do we learn to repair before we actually need to?
Nothing is broken. You want to learn how to mend things now, while the stakes are low, because the moment you need the skill is the worst moment to be learning it.
You want to learn repair while nothing needs repairing. This is wise and rare. Every couple ruptures. What separates them is not how often, but whether repair is a thing they know how to do. Learning it mid-rupture is like learning to swim in a current. First, agree what a repair attempt looks like between you. It is usually small and slightly awkward — a hand, a joke, a plain sentence. Name yours now, so that later each of you can recognise the other's attempt for what it is. Most attempts fail because they are not seen, not because they are not made. Second, practise on something tiny this week. A minor irritation, said aloud and mended within the hour. The skill is the same at every size; only the fear differs. Third, learn to say the repair sentence without the case attached. "I do not like how that went" repairs. "I do not like how that went because you always" begins the next round. Fourth, decide what you do when one of you is not ready. A pause with a stated return time is repair. A pause without one is abandonment. What does a repair attempt look like from each of you?
