How do we make a real plan for the year together?
You are proceeding rather than deciding. The year will happen either way. You want to sit down together and actually shape it, instead of arriving in December wondering where it went.
You want to make a real plan for the year together. Most couples never do this, and then wonder why they feel like housemates who share logistics. Logistics are not a life. First, do it separately before you do it together. Each of you writes, alone, what you want this year to contain. Alone matters: written together, the quieter person edits toward the louder one before the pen touches the page. Second, read them to each other without responding. Just hear it. There will be something on their list you did not know was there, and that is the entire point of the exercise. Third, find the three things you both want, and put dates on them. Not intentions — dates, in a calendar, this week. A plan with no dates is a conversation. Fourth, find the one thing only they want, and make it happen for them. Devotion is not a feeling you wait for; it is attention paid on purpose. This is what pays it. Fifth, agree when you will look at this again. Once is a nice evening. Twice makes it a practice. What is on their list that you did not know was there?
What changes unlock by starting
- The year gets shaped instead of just happening.
- You learn something about them you did not know.
- Shared plans have dates, so they occur.
- Something they wanted, and you did not, still happens.
